Album – Wanderlust
Release Date – 8th May
Review by Linda McDermott
For more than 25 years, Donna Lewis has continued to carve out her own path as a songwriter and performer. Best known for the worldwide hit “I Love You Always Forever,” Lewis became one of the defining voices of ‘90s pop, with the track recently finding a new audience after being sampled by Romy (The xx) and Fred Again. While she achieved chart success on both sides of the Atlantic, her profile has tended to be much stronger in the United States.

Lewis now returns with Wanderlust, a collaboration with composer and producer David Lowe, known for his work on BBC themes and the project Touch and Go. Released through Aztec Records, the album blends indie electronica and dream pop influences while continuing the thoughtful and understated style that has shaped her more recent work.

The whole album carries a strong summer feel, making it an easy listen for long, warm days. There’s an upbeat energy running through it that suits Donna Lewis’ voice perfectly, and with nine tracks it’s a record that naturally pulls you in and lets you drift along with it.
There isn’t a weak moment across the album. Everything sits together perfectly, and nothing feels out of place or overdone, a great skill in itself. The production works with Donna’s voice rather than around it, so it all feels very natural and unforced, which is part of what gives Wanderlust its easy-going charm.
Having said that, some of the tracks that stood out for me are the title track, it has a dreamy, drifting quality that sets the tone beautifully. Marry Me brings a brighter, more upbeat bounce with a playful melodic feel. I’m halfway through before I’ve even realised, which is always a great sign you’re really into something. Coming Home is all about those warm harmonies you find yourself humming along to and instinctively joining in with. Where Is the Love has a strong backbeat that makes you want to
move, while On The Other Side shifts the mood slightly with a quicker pace and a more airy, almost floating quality that still sits comfortably within the record’s flow.
Overall, Donna Lewis and David Lowe have created a light, uplifting album that’s easy to sink into. It’s an album that encourages you to switch off for a while, drift with it, and enjoy the moment, and what’s not to like about that?
Speaking about the album, Donna says “the songs developed naturally through her long friendship and creative partnership with Lowe, with each track connected to shared memories and experiences.” That sense of connection appears to run throughout Wanderlust, offering listeners another glimpse into an artist still exploring new directions while staying true to the melodic style that first made her stand out.
