Midnight Devils – The Mash House – Edinburgh.

“Shock and Awe – European Takeover Tour”

Saturday 9th May ‘26

Wow what can you say about this trio that hasn’t been said already, Sam”Spade”Morris(bass and vocals), Chris”Sniper”Hineline(guitar and backing vocals) and Jimmy Mess(drums) have an energy that you will find hard to pick another band even close to these “devils” as Sam and Jimmy with their punkier side along with Chris,s guitar rock backing.

Kicking off the hour of “fun filled” madness set in “The Mash House” due to the unfortunate closure temporarily of the “iconic Bannermans” not a stones throw from here in “Auld Reekies” Old Town the scene was set within minutes with an infection you can’t help but get engrossed in with the high kicking in unison from both “Spade and Sniper” and “Jimmy” drum stick punching starts to each song having everyone grooving along this American juggernaut was launched.

“Sound of Domination” opened the set before we went back in time for “Midnight Devils” and before we knew it we were treated to an almighty cover of “Van Halen”classic “Panama” which turned into a bit of a jam with “Adam” from support band “The Hellcats” joining, as well as Sam handing the mike around for some fan participation – just WOW what a powerhouse start to proceedings.

“Highway 69” an earlier single release from 2022 kept the high octane energy going and the audience many who have seen “The Devils” before were enthralled with the energy of the trio as we were treated to a midset of single releases, as “Left Leanin’”, “Get Laid” and “Shock the World” both released as a double sided splatter 7inch as the latest to rock our ears from the highly acclaimed “So Hard It Hurts” album release from 2024.

“Party in the Back” kept the party out the front at fever pitch before we went further back to 2018 with the earlier release “Memphis Mile” as the penultimate anthem as the set came to a close.

Having been asked if we could stand 2 more songs prior to “Memphis”the reply in the appreciative audience was a resounding “hell yeah” whereby the customary “pink balloons” became the backdrop as Sam delivered atop a stool whilst draped in his now familiar “cloak and crown”, balloon participation beckoned as they were kicked, punched and flicked amongst the band and audience – what a fun way to end a set.

I’ll ask – Which other band could even try to get away with this?

Set closer “We will rock You” was delivered minus Sam’s PA such was the energy prior to this I,d guess was “fried” like the audience.

The trio return in September for HRH Sleaze 9 Sheffield and it was alluded to that another visit to not only these shores but North of the border was not amiss due to Chris and his love of his ancestral homeland.

That’s now twice I’ve had the opportunity to write for you guys and it’s a pleasure to deliver such a genuine review on the back of your travels across your 7 gig 8 night visit to these shores.

Guys I sincerely hope to see you soon as I said before you deliver such an energetic, fun infused set it’s easy to forget your troubles.

Rock is really a cure for most ills and you certainly deliver such a dose in “Spades”..
