Zahna – Break Or Breakthrough: When Survival Becomes a Soundtrack

Some albums are made to entertain. Others are made because the artist has something they simply have to say. Zahna’s Break Or Breakthrough very firmly belongs in the second category. Arriving September 4 via XOVR Records, the label founded by Korn’s Brian “Head” Welch, this is a record forged in adversity, but crucially, it is not an album that simply wallows in it.

Zahna has already lived through enough to fill several lifetimes. A genetic kidney disease led to kidney failure at just 20, followed by a life-saving transplant from her mother. That experience became the emotional foundation of 2023’s Stronger Than Death, and now Break Or Breakthrough takes the story considerably further.

Produced and mixed by Kellen McGregor of Memphis May Fire, with Cory Brunnemann of Through Arteries contributing co-writing and associate production, the result is an album that feels enormous without losing its human core.

Opening with ‘True Enemy’, Zahna immediately establishes that this is not going to be a gentle ride. Heavy guitars collide with a vocal performance that can move from controlled melody to outright aggression with frightening ease. ‘R8GE!’ and ‘DOM1N8’ push that intensity further, delivering the sort of modern hard-rock punch that should translate exceptionally well to the live environment.

Then comes ‘Drag You’, where the darker elements of Zahna’s songwriting become increasingly apparent. There is a cinematic quality running through the record, with each track feeling like another chapter in a much larger story.

‘Love & Loss’ provides one of the album’s most emotionally exposed moments. Here, the heaviness isn’t simply coming from the guitars; it comes from the subject matter. Grief, damaged relationships and the consequences of life’s battles sit at the heart of the song, allowing Zahna’s voice to carry both vulnerability and strength.

‘The Pyre’ and ‘Defiler’ then drag us back into the fire. The latter, featuring Brian “Head” Welch, has already become an important milestone, with the track securing significant active-rock attention and becoming XOVR Records’ first charting hit.

But perhaps the defining moment is the title track, ‘Break Or Breakthrough’. Rather than simply choosing destruction, Zahna explores forgiveness, reconciliation and the possibility of rebuilding something that appeared beyond repair. It is a song about finding a way forward when walking away would have been easier.

‘The Archer’ follows with another muscular performance before ‘The Way It Feels’ brings the album towards its conclusion. Across all ten tracks, Zahna successfully balances metalcore aggression, hard-rock accessibility and darker pop sensibilities.What makes Break Or Breakthrough work is authenticity. Zahna isn’t pretending the darkness never happened. She is staring directly at it and asking what comes next. This is music about survival, but more importantly, it is music about what you do after survival.
