It’s been seven years since I last reviewed a Tragik album. This is album no.13 and it features the main man Phil Vincent on vocals, guitars, bass, drums and keyboards although he is ably assisted at times by Vince O’Regan on guitar, Damien D’Ercole on bass and Dirk Phillips on drums.
Don’t get fooled by the harmony vocal that opens ‘Phoenix Rising’ because it soon gets going on a wonderful heavy melodic rocker. Vincent’s vocals are the standout, full of anger, attitude and power. We get a raucous version of Bachman Turner Overdrive’s ‘Giving It AllAway’. I just hope Vincent had all his mates in the studio for this because it sounds like they’re having the best time. ‘Ungrateful’ brings to mind UK AOR legends FM with the vocal harmonies, subtle keys and catchy hook. Vincent gets sentimental on the huge ballad ‘Beyond The Moonlight’ which should be an FM radio banger. Hold on to your hats because he gets the rock n rolls again on ‘It All Comes Down To This’ before ‘Scoop’ brings a darker vibe as does ‘Living’ which has a kind of Beatles thing going on only a lot heavier. Bright 80’s synths open ‘Killbox’before the power chords come in and they grind out a heavy rocker. Things get even heavier on the powerful chug of ‘Burn It Down’ then we get the piano led ballad ‘Human’. ‘All I Have Is You’ is another heavy, biting, middle finger raised rocker then the caustic ‘Judas’ will have you singing the chorus all day.
This really does grab you from first listen. The riffs and hooks are immediate, and Vincent’s vocals are perfect for every song. If it rocks, he has the power, if it’s a ballad he has the control and if he has something to say he tells you about yourself. The music comes from all over the place – from Journey to Kiss to Slade to other heavier bands that don’t come to mind. Add to this a wonderful production from Vincent a brilliant mastering job from Jacob Hansen and you have the total package – great songs that sound awesome – especially really loud!
