Review by Linda McDermott

If you need a hit of fuzzed-up rock to get the heart racing, Cold Hard Kiss by We Three Kings is the perfect place to start. This UK duo, Rich on vocals and guitar and Pete on drums, deliver raw, punchy tracks that never hold back. Every riff has purpose, every chorus drives things forward, and the energy that this album oozes, simply mirrors the intensity of their live shows. It’s modern rock with bite, making them a must-see band on the UK festival and grassroots circuit.

They’ve already released four tracks from the album, the latest being the brilliant Shotgun, with each song showcasing their knack for riff-driven rock and unrelenting momentum. With the full album now here, it’s clear We Three Kings have crafted a collection that hits hard from start to finish, keeping the listener hooked every step of the way.

The album kicks off with the title track. There’s no messing about with this song; it’s straight into that fuzzed-up energy the guys are renowned for. It’s got a thumping beat right from the start and has you pulling faces like you’re in the band playing either guitar or drums. The chorus just adds to the energy and intensifies the feeling that this is only the beginning of something special from the guys.

Now Rich and Pete have my attention, they’re not going to let it go for one second, as they launch into Nothing Without Me. It’s another high-energy track, I’d expect nothing less from them as they dish out their easy-to-learn choruses. That’s what We Three Kings encourage, listener participation, and they’ve got it nailed. Even in the instrumental section there’s no let-up, leaving you tapping your foot and anticipating the next chorus.

Next, enter Joyrider, with the energy oozing out of the music and lyrics, it needs to be played loud, so I obligingly turn up the volume. Then there’s Your Love Is My Disease, another of their single releases. It’s laden with a thumping beat that just keeps coming at you and barely lets you have a breather.

Now then! Judas Take Me Home has a different feel to it altogether. With the bell tolling at the start, it builds tension straight away. I love the sound of this song as it creates a foreboding feel that runs through its entirety.

Bringing the fuzzy stuff back in at a rapid pace is Shotgun, the fourth single from this album. It’s another track that builds with intent from the start. The drums kick things off with a rapid pace before Rich’s guitar drops in and ties everything together. Once the vocals arrive, the song shifts up another gear, if that were even possible. With big riffs, driving rhythms and a chorus to shout back at the band, what’s not to like?

There’s no slowing down as Touch Me follows, and it’s another cracker of a tune. Shorter than the others, it hits the spot with a gutsy and forceful pace. We Three Kings have got a fantastic formula for energetic and intense music that works and I can’t get enough of it.

The penultimate song on the album is Dirty Devil. I love this! It has an underlying rockabilly beat that’s fuzzy round the edges, and it’s fast and furious. Along with the music, Rich brings urgency into the equation with his vocals, which spurs the song along, while Pete’s harmonies in the chorus add that extra lift and make it even more memorable. It’s definitely one to move to and get involved in, not that the rest aren’t, but this one has one of those easier choruses that runs all the way through it.

The final song, Son of a Gun, slows the pace down… well, nearly. It’s not quite as urgent as most of the other songs on the album, but it has a great bluesy feel that has been punked up. It travels along at a steady beat, lulling you into a false sense of ‘you’ve got this track all worked out’ until it lets rip three quarters of the way through, upping the intensity to remind you that this is We Three Kings.

I am really impressed with this second album from the band, it is so powerful it grabs you by the proverbial balls and keeps hold of them until Rich and Pete decide that you’ve had enough. This collection of high-energy anthems will have you bouncing around all over the place, and there’s nothing you can do to stop it happening.

My advice is, get the album and go out and see Rich and Pete live to be part of the whole We Three Kings experience.
