By Justin Smulison

Nick DiSalvo is a man of many musical personalities. Best known for his work fronting progressive heavy psych rockers, Elder, he rests his pipes as a composer, guitarist and keyboardist in two instrumental groups – delving and Weite.

delving’s sophomore album, All Paths Diverge, was recently released via Stickman Records & Blues Funeral Recordings and showcases a potent blend of psychedelic rock, krautrock, early electronic music as well as ambient sounds.

Comprised of seven tracks that clock in at over an hour, All Paths Diverge is truly a sonic journey, with each song a soundscape in its own regard. DiSalvo plays all the instruments on Paths, which was recorded sporadically through the years. Live, the band is comprised of guitarist Michael Risberg (Elder, Weite), bassist Ingwer Boysen (Weite, High Fighter) and drummer Uno Bruniusson (Maggot Heart, ex-Death Alley).

Ahead of delving’s European and UK tour with Iron Jinn, DiSalvo and I talked about the steps he took to produce and record the album, and how he determines what musical passages work best for one group over another. We also discuss why the ‘d’ in delving is lower-cased. We also play clips of “Zodiak” and “Omnipresence,” respectively during the intro and outro.

We also talked about his work with Weite, an international quintet which also features members of delving and Elder, in which DiSalvo is behind the kit and happy to play more of a supporting role. Weite’s sophomore album, Oase, will be released Nov. 22 (also on Stickman Records).

And following our interview, Elder announced a run of shows in the EU and UK in May 2025, which will conclude with an appearance at Desertfest Berlin in which they will play their groundbreaking third LP, Lore, in its entirety.

Bust out your speakers and play at full blast.
