REVIEW

The one lesson I’ve learnt during the years I’ve been reviewing live music is that you should always arrive early because you never know how good the support bands might be. A few people had told me to make sure I was there for Ugly Club who had made a big splash in previous incarnations and after a difficult time in their history they were now focused and ready to make waves again with their latest upgrade. To say I was blown away by this band is an understatement. On the night we were treated to seven songs of the highest quality, all performed with an intense aggression that almost took the breath away. Singer Imogen Storey is mesmerising. A fireball of the highest intensity, a singer that really connected with the audience whether it was through humour, the baring of her soul or the dropping of the occasional ‘F’ bomb (“This is probably why I’m so fucking angry all the time!”), which fitted perfectly with this style of music.

The bands sound is difficult to describe, but if you twisted my arm I’d say they were a cross between heavy bass dance music from the nineties amalgamated with the very latest Alternative Metal styling which mixes together to give the audience something that is pretty unique. All of the songs tonight are from the bands latest release, ‘Wendy’s Waiting Room’ which is a great record, but it would be fair to say that in a live setting these songs are far more aggressive and heavy than their vinyl counterparts. Imogen prowls the stage and has a phenomenal range, whether you are talking deep Metal growling right through to the highest of screams, but it’s her control that really catches the ear as everything is pitch perfect. Ben on guitar has a big stage presence and is clearly a quality guitarist, while James on the drums thrashes his kit like there is no tomorrow. This three piece unit are incredibly tight and for me a bright future is on the cards for this band. They are performing a headline set in Manchester in December and I’d urge you to get out and see this outfit in the flesh while you can still see them in venues of this size. Great band, engaging personalities and a brilliant start to the evening. I loved everything about them.
