I’ve seen bands that are good, some that are great, and then there are those rare gems that don’t just play music, they bring an energy, and a contagious atmosphere wherever they play. This band are a true feel-good powerhouse and fall into the last category. Having taken their infectious energy around the world, they’ve built a reputation as one of the most uplifting live acts out there.
The night began with two fantastic support acts who had the sold-out venue buzzing before the headliners took to the stage. And, true to form, the band wasted no time launching into a twenty-song set that raised the roof off The Cluny.
From the first notes of their mix of folk punk music it was clear that this wasn’t just a gig, it was more of a celebration. The band’s passion for their music was evident by their interaction with the audience and their boundless energy, bouncing around the stage with a playfulness that made it impossible not to smile. The interaction between husband and wife Dan and Lorna made me laugh, as it did everyone else, but it’s the chemistry between the whole band that is captivating.
At one point, a flagon of drink was passed around the crowd, a tradition that added to the night as their way of thanking everyone for coming to see them. Then, Lucy, a fan or friend, I didn’t quite catch the reason, but she was invited onto stage to sing a song with them, and not for a second did she look out of place as she danced about as she sang, pure enjoyment written all over her face.
The room was alive, and I smiled the whole way through, and that’s what it’s all about. Each song felt like an invitation to forget your worries, let loose, and embrace the moment.
The band’s knack for blending high-energy anthems with heartfelt melodies ensured there was never a dull moment. With songs such as ‘Mantra,’ ‘Unto the Breach,’ and then one of my favourites ‘Company at the Bar’ it was an onslaught of enjoyment from start to finish. ’Arm Wrestling in Dresden’ saw Lorna come into the crowd and arm wrestle those who were brave enough to take her on, with cheers echoing when the grapple was won.
Before I know it, the night ended and the set and encore were done, but I feel the crowd could have stayed there all night if the band was willing to play on. All I can say is that if Skinny Lister are playing near you, get yourself along to the gig. I can guarantee that you will come out of the venue ten foot taller with a smile on your face, and what’s not to like about a session of music therapy that is delivered with passion.
They have a few dates left in the UK so check out their website for gig dates and tickets www.skinnylister.com
