Revenent at the Tuesday Night Music Club Coulsdon

Review And Images by Ken Jackson

A Double Header at The Tuesday Night Music Club – Revenant & AK and The Red Kites It was a night of firsts and familiar faces at the multi-award-winning Tuesday Night Music Club in Coulsdon, as we welcomed a cracking double bill featuring Revenant and AK and The Red Kites. Neither band had played at the club before, however, many of us were already well-acquainted with Sam Lay, lead guitarist and vocalist of Revenant, from his appearances at the club several years ago with Sugar Man Sam. In fact, it’s been around eight years since that set, although I’ve had the pleasure of catching him live once or twice elsewhere since then.

It was a real treat to see him return to TNMC – this time fronting a powerful new outfit to a near capacity audience . Revenant opened the night, and we didn’t have to wait long to find out what they were all about. As the auditorium lights dimmed and flashed – the club’s traditional signal that the music was about to begin – a sense of anticipation swept the room. The band took to the stage, and from the very first chord, we were immersed in a storm of high-octane, full-throttle rock.

The Tuesday Night Music Club has always prided itself on variety, and while rock does make appearances in the setlists of many acts we host, it’s rare to see a band that leans so unapologetically into it. This was unfiltered, energetic, loud rock – delivered with precision, heart, and no small amount of swagger. Left handed Guitar and Vocalist Sam Lay was, as always, a magnetic presence, but this was clearly a band effort. Matt Hudson shared vocal and guitar duties with flair, while Robin Nutley on bass and Carl Donoghue on drums laid down a rhythm section that didn’t just support the music – it drove it, full speed ahead. Their performance was tight, confident, and bursting with energy.

They clearly have a deep well of original material, but with two bands on the bill tonight, we only got a taste of their full repertoire. Still, what we heard was more than enough to leave a strong impression. The set ended with a well-deserved standing ovation from an audience that had clearly been won over. Unfortunately, I lingered too long chatting and missed my chance to grab a copy of their EP ‘Best Medicine’ from the busy merch table – a rookie mistake I won’t repeat. Luckily, it’s available online, and I’ll be placing an order soon. You can check it out and support the band here:

A truly fantastic way to kick off the night. And with AK and The Red Kites still to come, the evening was far from over…
