Tucked away on an industrial estate in Mexborough, South Yorkshire, lies an unexpected gem of a venue The Gorilla Beer Hall. Nestled alongside the river, this intimate space played host to an electrifying night of live music featuring ’80s cult icons My Pierrot Dolls, supported by The Skunts.
The Skunts, a powerful punk-ska trio hailing from Mansfield. With Ruth on bass, Joe Sunday on guitar and lead vocals, and Pete on drums, the band launched into a blistering set filled with raw energy, tight rhythms, and just the right dose of attitude. Their blend of punk and ska, combined with original tracks, had the crowd bouncing from the start. Joe’s quick wit and cheeky stage banter, particularly his playful digs at My Pierrot Dolls’ frontman had the audience laughing between songs, giving their set a charismatic edge.
Headlining the night were the enigmatic My Pierrot Dolls, returning once again for what was jokingly announced as their “last ever show” a claim long-time fans have heard before. Led by frontman Ivor on vocals, the band also features Baz on bass, Ian on synths, and Pete on guitar. They delivered a powerful set of electro-goth anthems, each song laced with nostalgia and atmosphere, feeding the crowd’s enthusiasm and love for the band.
The audience, clearly made up of devoted followers, responded with cheers, dancing, and even laughter at Ivor’s now-traditional farewell speech. If this truly was their final show, they’ve bowed out with style and sincerity. But judging by the crowd’s reaction, they might be coaxed back yet again.
