Sovereign Quarter Horses
Horse Creek Farm
March, Cambs
Saturday 6th September 2025
Sovereign Quarter Horses is owned and managed by the husband-and-wife team of David and Sarah Deptford in the heart of the fens in March, Cambridgeshire. It’s beautifully flat with views for miles. It was originally established by David and his father to breed and train top level Quarter Horses in the UK.
What is a Quarter Horse? Well, it’s a horse that is specially bred to work on a ranch. They are extremely fast and have a compact body which is well suited for intricate, quick manoeuvres for rounding cattle. They are also used in rodeo, roping and barrel racing. The venue offers displays of barrel racing and western ranch work such as roping, rodeo and cattle work. They also offer riding lessons in the western/ranch style, western experience days, camps and clinics.
Rockin’ The Country has been going for three years and alongside the horse displays there are proper festival stores offering great food and western clothing plus the reason I was here – a whole days’ worth of country flavoured music. We missed Six Feet Apart but managed to settle down for Adam Brucass who gave us some utterly superb southern rock and outlaw country. Adam released a self-financed, self-released album last year and has gathered a lively and shit hot band behind him. The set relied heavily on his album with stunning tracks like ‘Here’s To The Weirdo’s’, ‘Maybe One More’, ‘Tearin’ Down The Town’ and the awesome slow build of ‘Forever’ They greeted a guest who I believe was Stevie Daniels for a raucous and thoroughly enjoyable run through of ‘Long Neck Ice Cold Beer’ which got a whole lotta people up and dancing.
Next up was Jack Browning who brought a more traditional country set the highlight being a wonderful version of Johnny Cash’s ‘Jackson’.
I decided to catch some barrel racing which was dead impressive. A team aged from 10 to 50 riding all sizes of horse. They started with a time trial and to see a ten-year-old girl manoeuvre a 300lb horse around three barrels in under 20 seconds was amazing. Next was the head-to-head and boy are some of those horses feisty – and fast. The riders all compete nationally and internationally and some have only been riding for less than 2 years.
Back to the barn to catch The Dolby Gang who hail from the East Midlands. They were more old school country but slipped in some Chris Stapleton and The Eagles plus they gave us a medley of Kenny Rogers classics as well as some of their own stuff.
Unfortunately, we had to leave early so we missed Lincoln Skins, Mikala Fredriksson and The Lainey Wilson Experience.
Although were only there a short while we had a great time. The whole festival is seriously family friendly with toddlers to octogenarian’s all having a great time – dogs are welcome too. Everybody entered into the spirit and dressed as authentically as possible, although there were several stores where you could get fitted out properly.
My most grateful thanks to both David and Sarah Deptford, Hannah for the tickets and to Janelle for the CD.
