By Glen Parkes
In modern blues music, there are few voices that can truly possess the depth and warmth of Elles Bailey. Her new single “Growing Roots”, the lead single from her upcoming album Can’t Take My Story Away (January 16th via Cooking Vinyl & Outlaw Music), reminds us once again why she is considered one of the most captivating singer-songwriters in Britain.
While Bailey’s voice has often been described as gravel and smoke, it is more honeyed here, still richly smooth and full of grit and emotion, just not pushed to the edge. It is the sound of an artist who has grown into herself, one who has warmed yet sharpened over time and writing and touring and spilling her guts every night on stage. And while Growing Roots is an anthem of inner strength, it also echoes Bailey’s own process of resilience, rooting herself and not allowing herself to be rattled off her chosen path.
This track is as much about connection as it is about survival. With a dirt-kicking groove and Bailey’s band kicking into high gear, it unfolds like a celebration of starting anew while continuing to wear the scars and stories that make us whole. It is an epithet of a song that feels lived in: more than just a song to hear, it feels like one to share. If you have not seen this fantastic singer, then you are missing out. Catch her tour early next year; you won’t be sorry.
