By Justin Smulison
Interviewing David Reece and Andy Susemihl about Rapid Fire Succession: On Target Part II was a genuine thrill for me as a long-time fan of both artists, individually and as the powerhouse unit that drives the Bangalore Choir.
The album is available worldwide from the newly launched BraveWords Records. Featuring 16 original tracks, broken into two “acts” for you vinyl fans, Reece’s unmistakable voice has always carried equal parts grit and grace, and hearing him discuss the new record’s creation was inspiring. He described Part II as “a reconnection with purpose”, and that sense of renewed fire radiates from every track. More than 30 years after the release of On Target, the band’s signature mix of melody and muscle sounds as vital as ever — a testament to Reece and Susemihl’s commitment to craft and authenticity.
Susemihl, whose guitar work remains as fluid and fierce as ever, spoke passionately about balancing continuity with evolution. While not serving as the producer, his trademark blues-tinged hard rock guitar work steers an album that explores the concept of forward motion. Songs like the lead singles “Bullet Train” and “Driver’s Seat”, as well as the sleeper hit “Sail On”, feel like instant classics, bridging the spirit of early-’90s hard rock with a modern drive that’s distinctly their own.
I’ve spoken with Reece and Susemihl separately on several occasions for Jace Media, but this interview is a true standout, as it marks the first time I’ve got them both in the same virtual room. Check out my prior interview with Andy Susemihl promoting his solo album, Milestones, here.
