Masterplan’s maestro Roland Grapow has solidified his reputation as one of the standard bearers of melodic metal for decades.
Following his departure from Helloween in 2002, Grapow and former drummer Uli Kusch formed Masterplan, and released their self-titled debut in 2003 with Jorn Lande on vocals. Since then, Grapow has consistently been praised for his guitar melodies, songwriting structure, and his work behind the glass – producing many talented rock, metal and prog groups.
Masterplan recruited singer Rick Altzi in the mid-2010s and has returned with Metalmorphosis, their first new album of original material since 2013, which serves as a testament to the band’s ability to adapt with the times while maintaining power metal roots. This also marks their first outing on Frontiers Records, which has been stepping into heavier territory in the last couple of years.

Jace Media Contributor Justin Smulison is a longtime fan of Grapow’s work. They delve into his career, deep cuts from Masterplan and Helloween, and a recent tour highlight that demonstrates Grapow’s resilience as a bandleader. They also talk about some upcoming festival shows and provide a brief glimpse into his upcoming solo album.
