Review By Darren McIntyre
Dea Matrona (Divine Mother Goddess) are rising indie/rock duo Mollie McGinn & Orlaith Forsythe from Belfast, Ireland, who burst onto the scene with a string of busking shows around the streets of Belfast. Their electrifying performances quickly caught the attention of YouTube and have amassed 6.9 million streams, and they have an online community of 200,000 followers. The girls have supported the likes of Eagles of Death Metal, Chris Shiflett & The Darkness, to name a few. Today they drop their infectious new single Magic Spell, which I will be reviewing for you today.
Magic Spell – A dark, brooding tone oozes through the intro as the pounding rhythm section leans in with a real solid snare/bass kick that lets the track breathe. The smouldering vocals ease in and really give the track depth and body as the girls really elevate this arrangement to the next level with their tone, groove and soulful, melodic vocals that just wrap themselves around this foot-stomping groover. The funky, deep, delicious bassline drops in and hits us with soulful tones that work well with the sweet, mellow guitar licks that are flowing freely through the track as the girls just bring a real gritty, soulful song to life with ease. This is one of those songs that instantly grabs our attention from the very first note. They have a knack for drilling down and bringing something special to the track; be it vocals, groove or tone, this is a real infectious number that will have you reaching for the repeat button for sure.
