Review By Darren McIntyre
Samantha Fish is a Kansas City-bred, New Orleans-based singer/songwriter/musician who has been setting the blues/rock world on fire since 2009. Samantha originally started life behind the kit but switched to guitar aged 15. Samantha would regularly go to Knuckleheads Saloon to hear the latest touring blues artists. Turning 18, she would join the singers & bands onstage to showcase her talents. Samantha has given us 6 studio albums, the latest being Paper Doll, which most believe is a career-defining statement, as Samantha tells us that her musical future is an open road. Total Guitar voted Samantha one of the top 100 greatest blues guitarists; she was nominated in 2024 for a Grammy for Contemporary Blues Album Of The Year for her collaboration with Jesse Drayton on Death Wish Blues. Samantha joined Slash on his 2024 S.E.R.P.E.N.T. US Tour. Samantha drops her incredible new single, Rusty Razor (Ft. Mick Collins), which I will be reviewing for you today. Please sit back, pour a cold one, and get ready to be dazzled by this killer new track.
Rusty Razor – The track kicks in the doors with a rasping, gritty guitar lick that sets the tone as we roll through this foot-stomping arrangement as Samantha unleashes her soaring, blues-soaked vocals. The addition of Mick Collins on vocals adds depth, swagger and plenty of juice to this killer track that just grabs our attention from the get-go. The kick-ass groove is just swirling above us as Samantha rips up the playbook with a soaring, meaty solo that just kicks in the doors and tells us that she cannot wait to hit the road and melt some faces with her colossal guitar work. This is a real doozy of a track that just captures the essence of this Kansas guitar player in all her element. We have a sultry, mellow bassline that just drops in and gives the track some juice as the groove wraps itself around us to let us know that this record is a real statement that will stop us all in our tracks; the killer fretwork matches the soaring vocals that just slap you around the face with intent as we feel the energy pouring from this crisp, clean arrangement that will have us reaching for the repeat button for sure.
