Lamb Of God – twenty-five years in existence, Grammy nominations, many highs and lows as any band has, and now this – probably their best work to date. Surprisingly it’s only their tenth album, but there’s a real feeling of freedom of creativity. They have harnessed their roots and added their metal grooves into a modern sound that is absolutely huge.
The title track opens with an apocalyptic intro of all jagged power chords before a spidery riff comes in and Randy Blythe roars like a demon. It’s the perfect song for now. ‘Parasocial Christ’ brings that old-school punk energy with metal power. It’s rapid and rabid! Bassman John Campbell lays down a line to begin ‘Sepsis’ as drummer Art Cruz slams behind him before Blythe growls and roars over some crushing guitars. Crikey, this is heavy! Cruz serves up a rapid double-kick frenzy on ‘Killing Floor’ as the choppy guitars get punchy, especially on the breakdown. ‘El Vacio’ has a sinister start with a slow build; you know it’s coming, and when it does, it’s a full-on kick in the nuts with Blythe changing from a smooth croon to a full-force roar. ‘St Catherine’s Wheel’ has another spidery riff into another massive groove. If you’re expecting a B.B. King trad blues on ‘Blunt Force Blues’, forget about it! It’s a chugging beast of a tune that has fuck all to do with the blues. ‘Bully’ has another sinister intro before it bludgeons you backward before ‘A Thousand Years’ brings another superb bassline from Campbell, which is mirrored by Morton and Adler, allowing Blythe to croon and roar in equal measure. ‘Devise/Destroy’ gets the acoustics out for the intro, but it’s soon overtaken by some more crushing riffage and a bouncy groove.
I reckon Lamb Of God can see into the future because this could be the soundtrack to what’s happening in the USA right now. It’s a warning, not a celebration, and this is just the start of things to come. Lamb of God have their fingers on the pulse of the nation, so heed their words, and hopefully change can come from within.
