Album Review Restless Spirit – ‘Restless Spirit’

Restless Spirit are from Long Island, New York and were formed by childhood friend’s singer/guitarist Paul Aloisio and bassist Marc Morello. They take their influences straight from Birmingham but add a bit of New York attitude into the mix. They started as Restless Spirit in 2018 and have released four EPS’s and this is their fourth full length.

The Burning Need’ opens on a huge spidery riff before they career into one almighty groove that is part stoner and part NWOBHM. Aloisio has an Ozzy-like wail that’s drenched in reverb and drummer Jon Gusman has that Bill Ward swing thing going on. ‘Hallowed’ brings that NYC attitude with another gigantic riff and more soaring vocals before the groove of ‘Red In Tooth And Claw’ offers something different. Things come down on the intro to ‘Desire Lines’ with its intermittent acoustic strum before the feedback leads into a heavy stoner rocker and a passionate vocal. They step on the gas pedal for ‘Desolation’s Wake’ which rattles along on another heavy groove before the acoustic interlude of ‘Ember’ leads us to the crushing ‘Time And Distance’ and the epic ‘Phantom Pain’ which is full of all of the above in nearly nine minutes.

There’s no hiding place in a power trio and these guys have the chops alright. The rhythm section lock right in together allowing the riffs and leads to take centre stage., Aloisio has a great touch and a gift of the riff plus his vocals are on point. Not strictly stoner and not strictly metal it occupies an area between both so will please fans of both genres.
