Review By Smudge Smith
I always thought the epic power metal domain was the realm of the Scandinavians and Europeans, so it was major surprise to find out Sellsword are from historic York. They were formed in 2013 and have released two previous long players, a stack of singles and a live album.
They start with a wonderful 90 second self-titled intro which leads to the monumental ‘The Bringers Of War’. Jeez this is huge and rolls along on a Celtic groove that invites you to throw your horns and raise your fists. ‘Saxon Steel’ is a call to arms where guitarists Henry Mahy and Jaymz Stephenson pull out a stunning riff behind some serious keys and rollicking rhythm from Tom Keeley and Tom Warner. Singer Nathan Harrison has a masculine powerful voice as he orders his troops to follow him into almost certain death. Mahy and Stephenson rip out some solo’s that will stop any galloping horde approaching, slicing them in two. Warner gives us a tribal beat to begin ‘Warwolf’ as horses run and crows fly before we get a darker and heavier lament. Harrison comes across as the tribal head giving a stern warning of what horrors are to come. ‘Mighty Mercenaries’ is a slow start before they speed into a real PowerWolf style banger – oh yes! It’s heavy, powerful and melodic and sure to be a firm live favourite. Now It doesn’t say who plays the keyboards on this release, but they should be given a medal because they’re superb. The piano opening on ‘Reignite The Flame’ is beautiful then they develop into a mid-paced torch bearing anthem. Crikey they fly off into ‘Boadicea, Rise’ with some seriously razor sharp riffage and another macho vocal before the melodic lines of ‘New Gods’ give way to another chugging riff and some stabbing keys then ‘Hall Of Heroes’ rattles along on some more punch-up metal. Final cut is the epic 14-minute plus ‘The Age Of Night’ which goes through some superb passages, soaring and falling and offering riffs galore and some wonderful keyboard passages. Keep up with the story because it must be a film. Makes me want to go back to York!!
This is superb and it’s from the UK which shows we can produce world class Power Metal. Sellsword just need someone to get behind them and give them a leg up. The songs are superb; the performances exceptional and the production is immense. Get yourself some of this you will not be disappointed.
