Revenge Is Sweet

If you look into the Tygers Of Pan Tang past it reads like a soap opera with members coming and going, public spats and splits. Thankfully it seems as if everything is settled now and here we have their latest slab of awesome melodic heavy rock and it really here, awesome!

It’s an eerie start on ‘Rise Up!’ before the riff comes in and Craig Ellis batters out a rhythm and leads the charge with Huw Holdings bassline. First impressions are the energy and Jaco Meille’s powerful vocals over that superb riffage.

‘Forevermore’ opens with power chords before it settles into a dark rocker with some fabulous fretwork from new guitar slinger John Footit. ‘The Powers That Be’ is firmly rooted in the NWOBHM but given a major modern boot up the rear and you will be singing the chorus all day!! ‘Dark Divinity’ drives along on another dark groove which got the thumbs up from Mrs Smudge! The title track brings some social commentary and shows why the Tygers are a favourite of Metallica and Megadeth. It’s punchy, angry and aggressive with a huge melody.

‘A Shadow On Fire’ is some fine heavy rock that has another catchy chorus then ‘The Nail’ brings the darkness again and has an epic eastern feel as it creeps along on a chugging riff that gets your head nodding. ‘The Fight Goes On’ is a bit brighter and more upbeat with another blinding lead break from Footit to open and brings some fine harmony vocals too. ‘Dark Skies’ is another NWOBHM throw back with that modern edge then album closer ‘Revenge Is Sweet’ goes into AOR territory with an FM-like ‘woooah’ backing vocal.

I really don’t have enough adjectives to do this justice. Absolutely world class performances and song writing and I would say it’s the best record Tygers Of Pan Tang have ever made. For me the star of the show is drummer Craig Ellis who provides so much energy the songs fly along. Credit too to John Footit who has brought his Schenker like melodic touch to the songs. This is absolutely essential for anyone who likes rock/metal music.
