Christmas has really come early. Punchdrunk Saints feature former Cockney Rejects guitarist Micky Geggus who has a real interest in hard rock. Back in 1982 the Rejects recorded a solid hard rock album called ‘The Wild Ones’ which was produced by UFO’s Pete Way. It’s full of beefy hard rock tunes with a mean muscular production. The Rejects followed that record with ‘Quiet Storm’ which was a homage to the likes of Humble Pie before they came back with the rockier ‘Lethal’ and now we have this debut from Punchdrunk Saints and boy what a follow up!

‘Holy Mother’ starts with a shit kicking rocker that has an almighty groove and introduces singer Marc Salmon who has some voice. There are loads of backing ‘woooaah’s’ and some blinding guitar work from Geggus –don’t be fooled this guy can play! ‘I Wanna Know What It’s Like’ is a punky rocky anthem that rattles along at a fair old clip and is bound to get you bouncing then ‘Days Of Our Lives’ brings it down a bit on a melodic rocker that has a proper catchy chorus. Shit gets darker and heavier on ‘Prayer For Tomorrow’ before a wonderful ballad ‘I Know How To Find You’. I never ever thought that Geggus would be the sentimental type but this is a fine ballad that hits the right spot and has some superbly subtle fills that are almost like FM! It’s back to the heavy stuff with the grinding stomp of ‘Your Time Is Done’ before the sleazy ‘Dirty Dreams’. We get a raucous version of CCR’s ‘Fortunate Son’ before the upbeat rocker ‘Over You’ gets you moving again. Final cut ‘Come Home’ is a beautiful southern tinged power ballad that has strings and acoustic guitars and shows the controlled power of Salmons voice plus more serious guitar lines from Geggus.

This is good, really good. There are belligerent rockers, up-beat punky bouncers and two world class ballads. Every song is a winner with catchy chorus’, great riffs and grooves that everyone from 8 to 80 will enjoy. Simply stunning and a wonderful surprise.
