Review By Darren McIntyre
Samantha Martin is a soul/blues/R&B/roots rock/gospel singer/songwriter from Edmonton, Ontario, Canada, who came to our attention in 2008 when she brought together The Delta Sugar. Samantha is a 2 x JUNO Award nominee & 7 x Canadian Blues Award nominee for Female Artist Of The Year. Samantha has given us Back Home in 2008, Samantha Martin & The Haggard – Mississippi Sun in 2014, Send The Nightingales in 2015, and Run To Me in 2018, and on the 22nd May she unleashes a new live album recorded during the band’s Love Is All Around Western Canada Tour in 2022. From the album comes the incredible single ‘My Crown’, which I will be reviewing for you today.
My Crown – There is a smouldering groove wandering through the intro as Samantha dedicates the song to the struggling musicians that are going through the motions as the sweet backing vocals weave their way through this blues-infused arrangement. The cool, slick guitar picks that are flowing effortlessly through the track just let the track build as Samantha lets her colossal, soulful blues tones take this track onwards as the band follows suit and unleashes a real deep, funky beat; the saxophone tones are littered throughout the funky track. A fresh, delicious bassline drops in and wraps itself around this toe-tapping piece. The trumpet and trombone drop in and really let the colourful tones flow and let us feel the depth of this soaring number as the rhythm section kicks in with a solid snare beat as the cymbal taps control the direction of this epic number that just solidifies this incredible musician as she elevates this number and then some.
