Review by Linda McDermott
Emerging from Southwest Virginia, Matt Jones and The Bobs have been crafting heartfelt, story-driven music since forming in 2011. The band came together while studying at Radford University, where Matt Jones (vocals, guitar) and his bandmates, known collectively as “the Bobs,” bonded over a shared love of Americana roots, and classic rock. That connection quickly turned into something more, shaping a sound rooted in honesty, grit, and real-life experience.
Their debut album, Brother’s Hymn, arrived in 2014 while they were still in college, and it set the tone for everything that followed. Built on themes of small-town life, love, loss, and the challenges of growing up, the record struck a chord with listeners thanks to its straight-talking songwriting and unpolished, heartfelt delivery.

But like many bands that start young, life eventually pulled them in different directions. In 2015, after years of putting everything into the band, they decided to step back. What followed was a decade-long hiatus, with each member focusing on their own careers and ventures. Despite the time apart, the connection between them never disappeared. The music, the stories, and the shared history were always there in the background, waiting for the right moment to resurface.
That moment came in 2024, with the band reuniting and stepping back into the spotlight with a renewed sense of purpose. While their foundations in Americana, folk, and southern rock remain firmly in place, this new chapter brings a fresh edge. There’s a subtle influence from the ‘90s, touches of grunge, and a broader, more expansive approach to instrumentation. It feels like a natural evolution, one that keeps their identity intact while allowing the sound to grow.
At the core of it all is their songwriting. Matt Jones and The Bobs have always leaned into storytelling, and that hasn’t changed. Each track feels like a snapshot of real life, shaped by personal experiences and delivered with a level of honesty that’s hard to fake. Whether it’s love, heartbreak, loss, or perseverance, there’s a sense that these songs come from a very real place, connecting easily with the listener.
Now entering this next phase, the band are building on everything that came before while pushing forward with confidence. They’ve grown, both individually and as a group, and that comes through in the music. The heart of the band is still very much intact, just with a maturity that only time can bring.
This new chapter begins with their second full-length, self-titled album, Matt Jones and The Bobs. It’s not about changing direction, it’s about continuing their story with a renewed sense of purpose.
Their latest single, “Wicked Ways,” captures that perfectly. As Matt Jones explains, the track reflects on family, forgiveness, and growth and recognising where you’ve come from, owning it, and moving forward without losing sight of it.
The track settles into a warm, easy tempo that instantly brings to mind summer days and long drives with the roof down on the way to a festival. It’s the storytelling that really takes the lead, drawing you in and keeping you there. The vocals have a distinctive edge, while the guitar work sits comfortably alongside them, laid-back and blending effortlessly, giving the track its chilled, easy-going feel. It’s a strong return that feels both familiar and refreshed. If this is what’s to come, there’s plenty to look forward to from Matt Jones and The Bobs.
