Review and Photos By Ken Jackson
It’s always a treat to discover and photograph a new band, and while new to me, Alex Voysey and his band have been making waves for a while. Recently appointed as Youth Ambassador for the UK Blues Federation, Alex is passionate about the benefits of music-making, especially for those with speech disfluency. Formed in 2021, Alex’s band has already released four albums, showcasing their rapid rise and prolific creativity.
Their performance at the Tuesday Night Music Club (TNMC) in Coulsdon was nothing short of spectacular. From the moment they took the stage, it was evident that this band is something special. The audience was captivated, and I was so impressed that I rushed to buy one of their albums during the break. The album, titled Blues in Isolation, is outstanding and deserves to be played loud and in its entirety. Produced by none other than Paul Long, who was in the audience to support the band, the album was recorded in a village hall in the Cotswolds. The collaboration between Paul Long and the band has resulted in a superb record that captures the essence of their live performance.

Alex Voysey, with his dynamic guitar skills and charismatic stage presence, led the band with confidence and flair. He was ably assisted by his talented band members: Ben Hands on the six-string bass guitar, Paul Arthurs on drums, and Andy Alpass on keys. Each member brought their unique touch to the performance, creating a rich, full sound that resonated throughout the venue.
Ben Hands’ bass playing was both intricate and powerful, providing a solid foundation for the band’s bluesy grooves. Paul Arthurs kept the rhythm tight and energetic, his drumming driving the band’s performance with precision and passion. Andy Alpass on keys added depth and texture to the music, his playing complementing Alex’s guitar work perfectly.

The setlist was a mix of original songs and classic blues covers, each performed with a freshness and vitality that kept the audience engaged from start to finish. Highlights included a soulful rendition of “Crossroads” and an electrifying performance of “Stormy Monday.” The band’s chemistry was palpable, and their joy in playing together was infectious.
The evening was beautifully compered and hosted by Richard Dunning, whose warm and engaging style added to the night’s charm. Russ Davey and his team did an excellent job on the sound desk, ensuring that every note was crystal clear and perfectly balanced.

The standing ovation at the end of their set was well-deserved. The Alex Voysey Band delivered a performance that was not only musically impressive but also emotionally resonant. Their passion for the blues and their commitment to their craft were evident in every song.
In conclusion, the Alex Voysey Band’s performance at the TNMC was a highlight of the week. Their music is a breath of fresh air in the contemporary blues scene, and their album Blues in Isolation is a testament to their talent and hard work. With such a strong showing at TNMC, it’s clear that the Alex Voysey Band is destined for great things. I look forward to seeing more of this fabulous band in the not-too-distant future.
