Beaux Gris Gris at the Tuesday Night Music Club

Review and Photos By Ken Jackson

I have been lucky enough to have seen Beaux Gris Gris (Robin Davey and Greta Valenti) six or seven times at least in the last few years, and they never fail to deliver an exceptional performance. Each time, they are accompanied by top-quality musicians, and last night was no exception with Kev Hickman on drums, Charlie Rachael Kay on bass, and Jack Herbert on keys. This formidable lineup set the stage for what followed: a masterclass of musical entertainment that captivated the capacity audience from start to finish.

The performance was a high-energy extravaganza lasting a full two hours and fifteen minutes, filled with both new songs and old Beaux Gris Gris favorites. The audience sang along at the top of their voices, creating an electric atmosphere that only added to the band’s dynamic stage presence. It’s clear that their UK tour is going exceptionally well, with packed houses at every venue. The Tuesday Night Music Club was no different, buzzing with excitement and anticipation before the band even took the stage.

Throughout the night, the synergy between the band members was palpable. Kev Hickman’s drumming was both powerful and precise, driving the rhythm with infectious energy. Charlie Rachael Kay’s bass lines were deep and groovy, perfectly complementing Jack Herbert’s vibrant and soulful keyboard melodies. Together, they provided a rich and textured backdrop for Robin Davey’s masterful guitar work and Greta Valenti’s captivating vocals. Each member of the band brought their own unique flair to the performance, resulting in a cohesive and exhilarating musical experience.

The setlist was a well-crafted mix of new material and beloved classics. Songs from their new album, “Hot Nostalgia Radio,” were particularly well-received, with the crowd eagerly embracing the fresh tunes. The album was selling briskly at the merch stand, and I have no doubt that I’ll love it once I get the chance to listen to it properly. Based on the live renditions of the new songs, it’s clear that Beaux Gris Gris have once again outdone themselves, pushing their musical boundaries while staying true to their distinctive sound.

One of the standout moments of the night was the band’s interaction with the audience. Greta Valenti, in particular, has a natural charisma that draws people in, making everyone feel like a part of the show. Her energy and enthusiasm were infectious, and it was evident that the band genuinely enjoyed performing as much as the audience enjoyed watching them. The night was filled with spontaneous moments of joy, laughter, and shared musical bliss, creating memories that will linger long after the last note had faded.

If you have the chance to catch Beaux Gris Gris before the end of their tour, I promise you won’t be disappointed. They are set to play at the 100 Club on Friday, 26th July, and it’s sure to be another unforgettable night of music. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to their sound, their live performances are a testament to their talent, passion, and the undeniable magic they bring to the stage.
