An Interview with Caregah: Sweden’s Groove Metal Champs

By Justin Smulison

Caregah is a Swedish sludge and groove metal quartet that recently celebrated the reissue of their highly anticipated debut album (self-released in 2023), Osmium. The wise minds at ROAR – Rock of Angels music and Reigning Phoenix Music had the good sense to produce this reissue, which includes the prior four-track EP Forsaken.

The band created a massive wall of sound, with doom and epic metal at its core. This is the type of music one expects from the Southern U.S., a la Down and Crowbar. And those influences are embraced, rather than shied away from. But vocalist/guitarist Marcus Kärregård’s also leans into the various vocal styles that each unique song calls for – whether it’s a near-growl on “Terrorized” or the pummeling opener, “Forever Merciless,” or conjuring an introspective gunslinger with “Tombstone.”

I was glad to catch up with three-quarters of the band for this interview, just after Osmium’s re-release and ahead of their performance at the Kristianstad Rockfest on July 12 at Tivoli Park in Sweden. We talked about songwriting, influences and what to expect from this rising metal powerhouse. Song clips: “Forever Merciless,” “Tombstone,” “Floods of No Return”

CAREGAH is: Marcus Kärregård – Vocals, Guitar Patrik Åkerlund – Lead guitar Douglas Svensson – Bass Filip Mathiasson – Drums
