June 8th, 2025 – Hall by the Sea, Dreamland Margate
Review and Images By Mark Thompson
The faded glamour of Dreamland Margate’s Hall by the Sea made for the perfect setting for an evening drenched in gothic theatre, ferocious riffs, and blackened spectacle. On June 8th, the seaside resort’s old-world charm clashed deliciously with the dark and twisted sounds of Cradle of Filth—making for a gig that felt more like a ritual than a concert.
Nervosa Ignite the Flames
Before the main act took the stage, the formidable all-female thrash-death unit Nervosa delivered a feral opening set that tore through the coastal air like a storm surge. Hailing from Brazil and Greece, this multinational powerhouse hit the ground running with razor-sharp aggression and a stage presence that screamed dominance. Tracks like “Seed of Death” sent the front rows into a frenzy, whipping up a sea of hair, fists, and devil horns. Their relentless barrage of speed and precision made sure no soul entered this night unscathed. This wasn’t just a warm-up—it was an adrenaline shot to the chest.

A Grand Entrance into Darkness
As Nervosa exited to a wave of approval, the atmosphere shifted palpably. Smoke curled across the stage. The lights dimmed to a blood-red hue. And then—two towering skeletal figures flanked the stage, heralding the arrival of the night’s twisted monarchs. Cradle of Filth emerged like phantoms through a Victorian nightmare, kicking off with “To Live Deliciously”, a sinister cut from their latest opus The Screaming of the Valkyries. It was an opening drenched in drama, power, and theatrical flair.

From that moment on, it was clear this would not be a conventional metal show. Dani Filth, ever the demonic ringmaster, took command with his unmistakable banshee shriek and theatrical swagger. His voice—still as piercing and possessed as ever—cut through the mix like a blade, dancing with the whirlwind of blast beats and shredding guitars.

The Ritual Unfolds
What followed was a masterclass in dark metal storytelling. “The Forest Whispers My Name” brought a wave of nostalgia from their early days, greeted with roars of approval. Newer tracks like “She is a Fire” and “White Hellebore” were greeted with equal passion, proving that Cradle’s modern output still bites hard and bleeds beauty.

One of the evening’s highlights came in the form of “Nymphetamine”. With its soaring melodies and haunting choruses, it pulled the crowd into a collective, gothic waltz. Couples swayed, horns were raised high, and a sea of mobile lights twinkled across the venue like a constellation of lost souls.
The musicianship throughout was razor-sharp. Drummer Martin Škaroupka was a machine behind the kit, driving the band’s theatrical set with unrelenting speed and precision, while guitarists Marek “Ashok” Šmerda and Donny Burbage carved out sinister, melodic lines that danced between beauty and brutality.

A Feast of Fan Favorites and Deep Cuts
The setlist was a carefully crafted journey through Cradle’s rich discography. From the orchestral drama of “Heartbreak & Séance” to the twisted romance of “Born in a Burial Gown”, every track brought with it a new wave of emotion and energy. The rarely-played “Creatures That Kissed in Cold Mirrors” offered a haunting interlude, full of eerie beauty that momentarily hushed the room.

As the evening neared its climax, the band unleashed fan-favourite “Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids”, turning the pit into a whirlwind of limbs and roars. “Death Magick for Adepts” summoned one last wave of chaos before Cradle closed the night with the iconic “Her Ghost in the Fog”. It was a cinematic end, complete with mournful melodies and Dani’s spine-chilling narration echoing through the darkened hall.

Final Thoughts
Cradle of Filth’s performance at Dreamland Margate was nothing short of spellbinding. The combination of chilling visuals, tightly executed musicianship, and Dani’s ever-theatrical presence made it an unforgettable night. From fire to fog, filth to finesse, it was a celebration of everything gothic metal stands for—beautiful, brutal, and born from darkness.
This was no mere gig; this was a summoning.
