Of Mice and Men, Electric Ballroom Camden, 11th December.

Review and Images by Ali Burman

An evening of metal at the Electric Ballroom in Camden on 11 December provided the perfect antidote to a dreary, damp, and dark winter night. Opening the bill, GORE delivered a set that was both punishing and sharply focused. In a venue renowned for its raw atmosphere and close quarters, the band’s sound felt especially confrontational, filling the room with crushing weight from the very first note.

Vocalist Hayley Roughton—whose day job includes working for NASA—delivered pitch-perfect vocals that were raw, powerful, and emotionally charged, yet balanced by moments of near-symphonic delicacy. By the close of their set, GORE had firmly established their presence, leaving the audience primed and buzzing. Their performance served as a stark reminder of how effective heavy music can be when delivered with precision, conviction, and a clear understanding of the space it occupies.

Next up was German industrial metal outfit Ghostkid.

From the opening moments, the band established a compelling push and pull between crushing heaviness and cinematic texture. Jagged guitar riffs collided with pulsing electronic elements, while the rhythm section drove these forward with unwavering precision. Vocals remained the focal point throughout, with Sushi Biesler shifting seamlessly between visceral screams and melodic hooks that lingered long after each song ended.

The Electric Ballroom crowd responded with immediate enthusiasm; midway through the opening track, both the mosh pit and crowd surfing were already in full swing. Undeterred by the chaos, bassist Stanni Czywill took things a step further, performing the next few songs from the centre of the mosh pit itself—much to the crowd’s delight. Stage presence remained confident and controlled, with minimal banter allowing the momentum of the set to build naturally.

The production favoured atmosphere over excess, enhancing the darker, more introspective elements of the music without detracting from its raw energy. By the end of their performance, Ghostkid had delivered a set that was immersive, intense, and emotionally resonant—an impressive showcase of modern heavy music that balances vulnerability with force.

And then came the main event. Of Mice & Men delivered a commanding performance, transforming the storied venue into a furnace of sound and shared intensity. In a room celebrated for its intimacy and character, the band thrived, proving once again that their music is at its most powerful when experienced live.

From the opening moments, the set was uncompromising. Massive riffs reverberated beneath the ballroom’s low ceiling while relentless drums drove the night forward. The band performed with precision and confidence, shifting effortlessly between crushing heaviness and melodic clarity.

Aaron Pauley’s vocals were a standout throughout, moving fluidly from ferocious screams to soaring clean lines that resonated across the packed floor. The audience response was immediate and sustained. Camden’s crowd matched the band’s energy, turning the venue into a unified surge of movement and noise. Singalong sections rang out with conviction, while breakdowns landed with seismic impact, amplifying the emotional

weight behind the songs. Rather than overwhelming the space, the band used the room’s closeness to their advantage, creating moments that felt both explosive and deeply personal. Production remained deliberately raw, allowing the performance to speak for itself.

There were no unnecessary embellishments—just a band fully locked in, delivering material that felt urgent and alive. Brief exchanges between tracks reinforced a genuine connection with the audience, underscoring the communal spirit of the night. It was clear that Of Mice & Men had left a lasting impression. Their Electric Ballroom appearance was a powerful reminder of the band’s ability to command a room and of the enduring impact of heavy music performed up close, loud, and without compromise.
