The Georgia Thunderbolts – Overlord – Single Review – mascotrecords

Review By Darren McIntyre

The Georgia Thunderbolts are a 5-piece rock ‘n’ roll juggernaut from Rome, Georgia, who originally formed in 2015 when classmates Couzzourt & Perry formed and then brought in Everett. Building their sound and getting themselves out there, they delivered their self-titled EP to us in 2020. This gave them the opportunity to open for the likes of Black Stone Cherry, The Kentucky Headhunters & Blackberry Smoke; the boys followed up their EP release with their debut album, Can We Get A Witness, in 2021. The boys brought us singles Gonna Shine & Take It Slow. As the boys hurtled into 2024, they brought us the new album Rise Above It All & a single of the same name and took the album all around the world on their tour. Like most things, they slowed down and let you take stock, and the boys have decided to enter into a hiatus for 2026 as the toll of recording, touring, life and health matters rose to the surface. The boys bring us a new track to ease us into their hiatus in the form of Overlord – Until We Meet Again, so please join me as I take us through this thought-provoking piece that will leave a lasting memory on us all. Like the boys say, it’s not goodbye; it’s just for now.

Overlord – A shuddering monster guitar riff erupts as this banger kicks in the doors and lets us have it both barrels as the boys bow out in style with a real earth-shaking beast. The pounding rhythm section is coming through with a real gutsy snare drum punch that allows the groove to build as the boys shred on the twin guitar licks that really let the track breathe; the full-on bassline is dropping in and hitting us with a real sludgy, dark, bruising tone that gives this track depth & swagger as we feel the energy erupting from this incredible arrangement. The whole track is a well-crafted bruiser that fits these boys perfectly as they bring us their heart and soul on a plate, as this epic track just wraps itself around us as we get to grips with this foot-stomping groove, as the soaring vocals deliver a real gravelly, rough-toned vocal that just tells the story of these boys and what they have given us since 2015. We feel the blood, sweat and tears oozing from each member as they bring us a real rockin’, meaty track that will have us reaching for the repeat button for sure.
