Stoner/Sludge
Heavy Psych Sounds
Release Date – March 6th 2026
Review By Smudge Smith
Oxfordshire’s Desert Storm bring us another mighty slab of stoner/doom on the heels of their fine 2023 effort ‘Death Rattle’ which saw them broaden their sounds. Looks they have another new bass player too with Andew Keyzor stepping into the breach.
It’s slow doomy start on ‘Newfound Respect’ where singer Matt Ryan gives us a real masculine vocal over some heavy heavy sludge before they change gears and give us a mighty Sabbathian groove. ‘Shamanic Echoes’ goes psych at the start before it oozes into a another sludgy grind with Ryan giving more of a death edge to his vocals and they go through a couple of movements before the acoustics come out for ‘Woodsman’ and offers some light relief before they step on the gain pedals on the chorus’s before they come back to the trippy stuff. ‘Cut Your Teeth’ crushes from the off and doesn’t let up with its arena sized groove which is continued on ‘Rot To Ruin’ which is slower and sludgier. We get a two-minute instrumental interlude with ‘Carry The Weight’ before the brief rockin’ bludgeon of ‘Dripback’ which leads to another groover ‘Law Unto Myself’ with Ryan getting a bit shouty before ‘Twelve Seasons’ brings things to an aggressive climax.
Desert Storm are really developing into a fine band and are continuing to spread their musical wings but without forgetting where they originally come from. There are plenty of gigantic riffs and grooves, but they now give us some different sounds and Matt Ryan can pretty much sing anything allowing the band to stretch, so anything goes. Another fabulous release from a fabulous UK crew who just get better and better with each release
