Massive Wagons, Everywhere We Go Tour Review.

Gloucester Guildhall

Review and Photography by Brian Cherrison

A golden opportunity to catch up with the Wagons on their latest UK tour and almost on my doorstep at Gloucester Guildhall could not be missed. After navigating the streets to make our way to the Guildhall, with the sounds of boy racers using the nearby multi story carpark to recreate the fast & furious, a good reason not to use that car park. On entering the Guildhall a labyrinth of stairs & corridors eventually led us to the hall for the night’s entertainment via the bar for a quick pint.

The doors opened at 19:00 & the audience quickly filled up the venue ahead of the opening band. The opening act was LN, a band from Newcastle, they stood in at short notice for Scarlet Rebels who were booked up for another festival. Despite this there was a good crowd already in the hall, great to see for an opening act.

The band fit in the Pagan Viking genre and their theatrical look / music certainly backed that up, after a stirring intro that suitably prepared the audience, Ellen entered with the opening vocals. The band delivered a mixed set of eight songs from a few tracks stirring a mosh pit into action to a moving song called Mother and another song with an appearance from a horror puppet head on a stick!

There was even a brief ceremony with Ellen spreading fake blood on her face during a song. Ellen made maximum use of the available stage area as she danced to the songs, her energy levels almost a match for Barry Mills! I love discovering new bands such as LN and thoroughly recommend checking them out.

During the gap there was a brief talk from Andy’s Man Club with the key message ‘Its Ok to Talk’, Massive Wagons are great promotors of the organisation and have them at all their gigs.

Now it was time for the headliners, the mighty Massive Wagons from Lancashire, this was to be the final gig of this tour as they head back into the studio to work on the next album. By the time for their slot the venue was full, it was sold out well ahead of the evening with a few travelling a fair distance to get their ‘Wagons’ fix with some attending a few of this tour.

As the Sex Pistols song ‘Pretty Vacant’ blasted through the speakers the band entered the stage then broke into their opening song ‘Everywhere We Go’, there was no gradual start, it was straight in with full energy as you would expect, Baz bouncing round the stage like Tigger on steroids.

From the start Baz was engaging the crowd, taunting toggers as he leapt about, did high kicks, acrobatic leaps of his box, jumper off, jumper on, hat off, hat on and repeat! They rapidly get through the opening songs with ‘Fuck the Haters’ promoting a few fingers to be raised whilst everyone sings back at Baz, all in great spirit. Whilst Baz is performing, Adam, Bowzer & Stevie all take turns to take stage front for the audience, Stevie must have one of the biggest smiles in rock music!

Not to forget Alex sat back on the drums doing his part of the well-oiled machine, that is what this band has become, a well knitted together and slick team that seamlessly glide through their sets with ease, utter professionals but keeping their personal connections with the fanbase. They then ran though ‘Germ’, ‘Hero’ & ‘Glorious’, Baz delivering the gritty power. Then it is into ‘Night Skies’ with a nod to Andy’s Man club, always a song that gets me.

After ‘The Good Die Young’ it is ‘Generation Prime’, this gave Baz an opportunity to congratulate Skindred on their no 1 album, they have a great friendship with the band with Benji contributing to this song. They then moved to newer material with ‘House of Noise’ followed by ‘Banging in Your Stereo’, always a crowd pleaser that gets the audience bouncing. At this point of the evening Baz performed from within the audience moving about as he gave high fives, hugs etc, forever the performer that loves to connect with the Wagons fans. The main set ends with China Plates, the 13th Wagons song of the evening.

There is an encore with the ever favourite ‘Back to the Stack’ the classis nod to Quo, always a crowd pleaser. The set ends with ‘In It Together’, this is where Baz took his evening crowd surf boat trip, all was going well until the return leg, a shout of not that way, there is a gap, too late, Baz is ejected from the tipping boat, he bounces up, still singing and is soon back on the stage bouncing about as if nothing happened.

Sadly for me yet another gig seemed to end far too soon and it was time to negotiate the streets of Gloucester dodging drunks arguing with a taxi driver as we headed to the car and the sound of the boy racers still bombing round the multi-story, I wondered with a smile if they couldn’t find their way out.

I have followed Massive Wagons for many years, and they just keep getting better, they still maintain their strong connections with their fanbase via Patreon, meets and greets and other forums, something that is great to see. I am looking forward to what the new album brings and the follow-on tours no doubt, fingers crossed it is local again. If you get chance watch the music video below, Massive Wagons partner with Andy’s Man club & the video for the song Night Skies is in support.
