Instrumental music has always relied on its ability to tell stories without words, and Portuguese guitarist Márcio Teixeira is embracing that challenge with Gæa, the latest release from his trio, 7Keys, which is now available from WormHoleDeath Records. Built around soaring melodies, technical precision and cinematic songwriting, the album draws inspiration from mythology, nature and the emotional landscapes that exist beyond lyrics.
Teixeira’s path to becoming a guitarist was anything but conventional. After teaching himself the instrument, he refined his craft under renowned guitarist Paulo Barros before forming the creative partnership that would become 7Keys alongside bassist Igor Rodrigues and rhythm guitarist Gabriel Pereira.
Across eight compositions—including “Echoes of Renewal,” “Æther” and “The Weight of Atlas”—Gæa showcases a modern instrumental metal approach that balances progressive musicianship with memorable hooks – with all songs clocking in under five minutes. Fans of Trivium, Avenged Sevenfold and Iron Maiden will hear familiar influences, but 7Keys is equally committed to carving out its own identity through dynamic arrangements and emotionally driven melodies.
From his new home in Switzerland, Teixeira joined Jace Media Contributor Justin Smulison to discuss the evolution of 7Keys, the creative processes behind Gæa, whether the band will ever find a singer and why instrumental music can communicate ideas and emotions just as powerfully as any lyric-driven song.
