Some stories from ancient mythology continue to resonate through the centuries, and Asphodelia’s new single, “River, River,” takes one of Greek mythology’s most haunting tales and gives it a fresh, powerful perspective. Released ahead of the band’s forthcoming album Unfairy Tales, due November 13 via Kraempus Records, this is a song with a deeper story to tell.
Inspired by the myth of Apollo and Daphne, “River, River” follows the desperate plea of a nymph fleeing Apollo’s relentless pursuit. Rather than surrender to a fate she refuses to accept, Daphne calls upon her father, the river god Peneus, to transform her into a laurel tree. It is a story of fear, courage and the extraordinary lengths one soul will go to reclaim freedom.
What makes this concept particularly compelling is the emphasis on Daphne’s perspective. Her transformation is not simply a tragic ending but an act of defiance, turning vulnerability into strength and survival into rebirth. There is something timeless about that message, giving the single an emotional weight that reaches beyond its mythological origins.
Asphodelia use this ancient narrative as a first glimpse into Unfairy Tales, promising a journey into darker storytelling and themes that challenge familiar ideas of power, identity and control. The concept alone makes “River, River” an intriguing introduction to the album.
Sometimes, the most powerful escape is to become something that can never be owned. With this release, Asphodelia bring that idea into focus, setting the stage for what could be a fascinating next chapter.
“River, River” is a compelling invitation into Asphodelia’s world of myth, transformation and resilience.
