Review By Darren McIntyre
Before The Dawn are a melodic / death / gothic metal band from Finland who originally formed in 1999, the band like most have had changes in personnel but have kept the music the main focus. Toumos decided in 2013 to rest all his band commitments to bring us a new musical union in the shape of Wolfheart, the outfit went on to have success but Toumas decided in 2021 to ressurect Before The Dawn and with it came a new vocalist, single and EP. The boys have given us 8 studio albums and in September they deliver their new album Cold Flare Eternal, from that comes the growling new single Shockwave which I will be reviewing for you today.
Shockwave – The track erupts into life with a pounding rhythm section as a slick, clean guitar lick wanders freely through the intro before the growling, dark, melodic vocals fill the air. The shredding guitar riffs work well with the simmering keys that are littered throughout the arrangement as the track builds and builds with a real gritty, rasping tone that is quite infectious, the fast paced thundering snare drum beats really drives the track onwards as we feel the melodies wrap themselves around us. The killer vocals are jusr dark, brooding and really adds swagger to this crisp offering, the bassline is dropping cool, funk laden grooves that just allow the track to breathe with real ease, this is one of those tracks that just grabs your attention as the punchy rhythm section comes through and delivers cymbal crashes that work well with the shredding, power ravaged guitar licks that are flowing effortlessly through this real melodic, haunting beast as it gathers pace and really grabs our attention.
