After releasing their debut single in 2024, Leaving On My Own, this Northern Irish quartet return with their latest track, When the Lights Go Down.
The song could be classed as “rock lite” — perhaps soft rock. It doesn’t feature thunderous drums or searing guitar solos, but it’s melodic and would not feel out of place at an ’80s rock revival festival. With keyboards playing a prominent role, it has a distinctly ’80s flavour, particularly reminiscent of Deacon Blue.
According to the press release, it’s a break-up song; however, its upbeat nature ensures it won’t leave listeners feeling downhearted.
The lyrics are catchy enough, and I can easily imagine singing along to it at a gig or in the car — though it doesn’t quite reach “anthem” status for me. It’s clear the band draw influence from the softer side of ’80s rock.
Ultimately, the track is pleasant and inoffensive, but it didn’t quite grab me.
