Review By Darren McIntyre
Solomon Hicks is a blues hotshot from Harlem, New York, who is a thrilling paradox, a sonic contradiction who is an old-soul roots scholar who salutes ancient musical forms: blues, jazz, soul, funk & gospel. Solomon brought us his debut album, Harlem, in 2020, which catapulted him into the blues limelight; the Harlem music scene allowed him to soak up the sonic kaleidoscope that flowed through the city. Solomon dropped his killer single Further On Up The Road from his soon-to-be-released new album, How Did I Ever Get This Blue, and followed that with the awesome Flyin’ High (Yesterday), which I will be bringing you today.
Flyin’ High (Yesterday) – The track opens with a cool acoustic strumming tone that has killer honky-tonk piano tones lingering through the intro as we feel the blues wrapping itself around us. The rhythm section leans in with a solid snare drum punch as the bass kicks follow with cymbal snaps that really get the juices flowing. The arrangement feels like you are walking into a blues club with your gal and feeling this infectious groove grab a hold of you and really let you feel the blues rippling through the club. The soaring, melodic vocals really tell their own story as Solomon really cuts loose and gives his all in this toe-tapping monster track that brings a killer, meaty bassline that just delivers a cool, funky tone that has us snapping our fingers to this killer groove that is building as we run through this fantastic offering.
