Review By Darren McIntyre
Cello is a Brighton – based artist with a post – punk mantra wrapped in a biting wit & restless energy. Vitamins introduces Cello as a singular new voice : confrontational, playful & uncomfortably honest. Built on hypnotic repetition & deadpan energy, the track skewers modern expectations of femininity, wellness culture, prodactivity & obedience. Cello’s background gives her an unexpected depth. Nicknamed for her classical roots, she trained as a Cellist @ Royal College Of Music in London before tearing up the rulebook and moving towards post – punk minimalism, today sees Cello bring us her infectious new single Vitamins which I will be reviewing for you today.
Vitamins – The punk – esque groover bursts into life with a solid snare / bass beat that lets the searing guitar riffs wander freely through the intro as Cello leans in and lets her punchy, melodic vocals take the track off down the road. The pulsing, dark, brooding bassline drops in and hits us with a real meaty groove that allows the track to build and tell it’s own story as this foot stomping bruiser gets the juices flowing. There is a sweet, innocent tone to the track but that is soon banished when the growling guitar licks gatecrash the party and lets Cello tell the story that catches our attention, the punk – infused rock n roller is a catchy, pop tastic tone that just flows freely through this rhythm based tale that is putting a smile on your face as we listen to the catchy vocals that weave their way through this finger clicking groover that will have us reaching for the repeat button again and again.
