The Hot One Two Return with a Fierce New Chapter in “The Reaper”

Review By Halina Wegner

The Hot One Two are back, and they’re coming in hot — quite literally — with “The Reaper,” the first single from their forthcoming album Virtues (due October 2025). Known for putting the swagger back into UK rock ‘n’ roll, this Cambridge-based quartet — Simon West (vocals), Nick Manners (lead guitar), Nick Blackburn (bass), and Joe Chivers (drums) — have built their name on hard-hitting riffs, powerhouse vocals, and an unapologetic live presence.

If their debut concept album Superbia (2023) was a deep dive into the seven deadly sins, Virtues flips the script. The new record explores the seven capital virtues, and “The Reaper” sets the tone by tying its central character — traditionally a symbol of death — to Humility and Justice. The result is a compelling paradox: a song that warns against wasting time in fear, instead urging listeners to embrace life with awareness, accountability, and purpose.

Musically, “The Reaper” captures The Hot One Two’s signature balance of old-school rock swagger and modern metal punch. Manners’ guitar work roars with attitude, Chivers’ drums thunder with precision, and Blackburn’s bass drives the track forward with a muscular groove. At the center, West’s commanding vocals deliver the message with conviction — a mix of grit, melody, and emotional weight.

Simply put: “The Reaper” isn’t just a song; it’s a rallying cry to live boldly, with eyes wide open and amps turned all the way up.
