Review By Glen Parkes
Birmingham’s celebrated independent artist Rebecca Downes returns with Hold The Reins, the third single from her upcoming sixth studio album A Storm Is Coming, set for release on 31 October 2025. Co-written with long-time collaborator Steve Birkett, and produced by Birkett alongside his son Steve Birkett Junior, this track delivers both a sonic punch and a lyrical rallying cry.
From the opening “Woah oh oh” refrain, Hold The Reins bursts with urgency, propelling listeners into a storm of determination and self-liberation. Downes’ commanding vocals cut through with both raw emotion and sheer conviction, urging us to break free from the comfort zones that hold us captive. The lyrics are a direct call to action: “Been the victim way too long / Got to make the change” — a line that feels as much like personal testimony as universal truth.
Musically, the track rides on a driving beat and melodic hooks that blend rock grit with soulful overtones. The arrangement balances its infectious chorus with verses that challenge complacency, creating a dynamic push-and-pull that mirrors the song’s core message. Subtle production touches — from the layering of harmonies to the guitar flourishes — ensure the track feels rich without losing its live-wire energy.
Downes has always been an artist unafraid to bare her truth, and Hold The Reins is no exception. It’s not just a song about taking control — it’s an anthem for anyone standing at the edge of change, deciding whether to leap. With A Storm Is Coming on the horizon, this single suggests that the album will be a bold, unapologetic statement from an artist who’s never been content to simply play it safe.
Rebecca Downes isn’t just holding the reins — she’s charging forward, full throttle.
