For more than two decades, Philip Shouse has built a reputation as one of rock’s most dependable axemen—cutting his teeth as a touring guitarist for Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley and John Corabi, and in 2020, trading riffs with legends as a full-time member of Accept.
Shouse has been busy behind the scenes and during whatever downtime he can secure, as his debut EP, Side 1 was released in February via Wild Kingdom/Sound Pollution. On this fun, rock and roll release, the Nashville-based guitarist is stepping into the spotlight as a frontman and singer.
In this conversation, Shouse described the debut release as a natural extension of the songwriting he has quietly developed over the years while performing with artists across rock and country. We talked about how Side 1 enabled Shouse to find and establish his own creative voice and explore the melodic influences that sit alongside his heavier credentials.
He provides all the vocals guitars and bass here, and lead single, “Run Away From You,” opens the record with a swaggering groove reminiscent of classic The Rolling Stones. “Won’t Let Go Again,” is an acoustic-based and introspective journey detailing his sobriety, while the closer “Time Bomb” is a quirky and fun play on words and sounds.
It was a lot of fun to reconnect with Phil for Jace Media – his first interview with us was back in 2020. We reminisced about that first virtual meeting and took a visual stroll down memory lane via photos from his first show in New York as a member of Accept – which was rescheduled from 2020 to December 2021 at one of the last rock clubs near me in Nassau County, Long Island.

We also discussed his excitement just ahead of the Shouse It Out Loud tour from March 6 – March 29 – which starts in Sweden and wraps in Norway (dates are below), and includes Night Flight Orchestra bassist Mats Rydstrom, and Hellacopters drummer Nicke Andersson. And we get some clarity on his status in Accept (Spoiler alert: He’s still in the band) and what we can expect from Side 2.
