New York three-piece Some Days Are Darker began life in 2019 as the solo songwriting project of former metalcore guitarist Lear Mason, before developing into a three-piece with Chris Martin on bass, guitar and keyboards, and Robbie Williamson on drums, multi-instrumentals, and production.
The band released their self-titled debut album in 2022 and have shared stages with The Chameleons, Vision Video and House of Harm, as well as touring the US and Canada with Pink Turns Blue and Theater of Hate.
Their sound takes in darker alternative rock, goth, and synth-driven sounds, and with a new album, Black Box Warning, due later this year, Memorize You gives us a first taste of what’s to come.
For me, this song immediately takes me back to the early eighties, with its synth-pop beat building throughout the track and giving me definite Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division vibes. There’s something about that sound that just works, and there’s plenty to like here.
The melody is great, but it’s the beat and overall feel of the track that really grabbed me. This is one of those songs that I can imagine being played loud in a club, with the beat filling the room and people getting lost in the music.
I also really like the tone of the Lear’s voice. There’s a quality to it that adds another layer to the track and gives it a depth that works particularly well with the darker gothic feel of the music.
Having never heard Some Days Are Darker before, I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I pressed play, but Memorize You has definitely left me wanting to hear more. And that, for me, is always a good sign.
Sometimes discovering a band completely new to you is one of the best things about writing reviews, and this has certainly given me that feeling. Now I’m curious to hear where they go next, and with Black Box Warning on the way, there’s a little bit of excitement in discovering a band that, until now, had completely passed me by.
For a first introduction to Some Days Are Darker, Memorize You has certainly made an impression. Needless to say, I’m looking forward to hearing more.
