Lucie Sue – Live – Bannerman’s – duffpress

Lucie Sue is a ferocious singer-songwriter from Biarritz, France, dragging grunge and hard-edged rock kicking and screaming into 2026. A child of the MTV generation, raised on the uncompromising sounds of Metallica and PJ Harvey, Lucie’s musical fire is matched by a sharp artistic vision forged through classical cello training at the Lyon National Conservatory and a successful career as an art director. That visual instinct bleeds into everything she does, giving her music a bold identity and a sense of purpose that feels anything but accidental.

Lockdown proved to be the catalyst that pushed Lucie into the spotlight, resulting in her debut album, To Sing In French. Fast forward to 2025, and the follow-up, Battlestations, kicked the doors wide open, earning her serious attention across Europe. Now, armed with a killer band, Lucie Sue has hit the road on her first UK tour, fresh from a storming main stage appearance at Planet Rock’s Winter’s End Festival. Tonight, she rolls into Edinburgh’s Bannerman’s, and there’s a real buzz in the room as anticipation builds.

As the lights dim and the house PA fades, Lucie, Enzo, Laura and Mitch take to the hallowed Bannerman’s stage and immediately ignite the place with “Battlestation”. The lead single is paraded proudly, hitting with both barrels as the band announce themselves in no uncertain terms.

For a wet, dark Monday night in Auld Reekie, the turnout is solid, and while Lucie admits she’d hoped for a bigger crowd, the energy in the room is undeniable. This is Lucie Sue’s first Scottish headline show, and both band and audience are clearly feeding off each other.

Next up, “Bachat Bouloud” gives us our first taste of French-language firepower. Laura is a force of nature on bass, bouncing across the stage and dropping thick, delicious grooves while Mitch’s drums thunder with authority. Enzo’s guitar work is slick and precise, his crisp licks slicing through the mix as the rhythm section locks the room down. A gritty, punk-inspired groove follows, complete with chant-along vocals that pull the crowd right into the heart of the set. The smiles onstage say it all — this is landing exactly as intended.

“To Sing In French” brings a darker, more brooding mood, allowing Lucie’s towering vocals to take centre stage. The sultry bassline adds a delicious sense of menace, and hearing the band sing in their native tongue feels intimate and endearing. It’s fast, furious and unapologetically in-your-face — proof that this band has depth as well as bite.

That depth shines again on “Lick Your Teeth”, where a heavy-ended bassline underpins a haunting, toe-tapping arrangement. Lucie’s soulful delivery carries a dark, smouldering intensity, showing just how versatile this four-piece can be. “Burn Your Candles” then cranks the energy back up, sending fists into the air and getting the crowd fully on board as the band settles into their stride.

Between songs, Lucie charms the room, joking about her attempts to pronounce “Edinburgh” correctly and praising the city’s stunning landmarks. A standout moment comes when she dedicates “I Will Shit Where You Sleep” to me, following our pre-show chat and a recent review — a genuinely proud moment and one that led to plenty of laughs after the show.

The middle of the set flies by with “Bela”, “Knud” and “Boring”, each revealing a different shade of the band’s personality. The crowd may be small, but it’s deeply appreciative, responding warmly to a band that’s clearly watching faces, feeling the feedback, and giving everything in return. A sombre acoustic intro later in the set slows the pace, allowing Lucie and Laura’s soaring vocals to shine before the tempo builds again into a bruising, toe-tapping powerhouse driven by pounding snare hits and a dirty, delicious bassline.

“Famous Last Words” detonates with a fast-paced, gritty swagger, the crowd singing along as the heat pours from the stage. Lucie then enlists our help for “RTWWT (Ride The Wild Wired Tiger)”, and the venue erupts as we shout the chorus back at the band. Enzo drops to his knees for an epic guitar solo that seals the moment, pure rock ’n’ roll joy bursting from every note.

The set closes with “Reckless”, a no-nonsense finale packed with rasping riffs, punchy drums and a huge, menacing bass tone. It’s the sound of a band absolutely certain of who they are and where they’re going.

On this evidence, Lucie Sue is the real deal — raw, powerful and fearless. Bannerman’s may have been a stop early on her Scottish journey, but one thing’s for sure: we haven’t heard the last of this explosive four-piece.
