MASON returns with “This Thing Called Love,” the first single from the forthcoming album Edge Of Destruction, proving classic AOR is far from yesterday’s news. Featuring the legendary Steve Overland, the track combines polished melodic rock with the kind of huge hooks and songwriting that fans crave.
From the opening bars, “This Thing Called Love” feels confident. MASON has clearly taken the lessons learned across his previous releases and pushed them further, creating a track that sounds both rooted in the golden era of AOR and firmly connected to the modern melodic rock scene.
The addition of Steve Overland is a masterstroke. His unmistakable vocals bring extra warmth, authority and emotional depth to the song, complementing MASON’s clear melodic delivery beautifully. The two voices work exceptionally well together, giving the track an extra dimension without overpowering its arrangement.
Musically, this is AOR done properly: muscular guitars, shimmering keyboards, a driving rhythm section and a chorus that demands another listen. There is polish throughout, but thankfully never at the expense of personality. The songwriting remains the star, with melodies that stay with you long after the final note.
“This Thing Called Love” also offers an exciting glimpse of what Edge Of Destruction could deliver. Following I Can’t Wait and Seconds To Impact, MASON sounds increasingly comfortable in his own musical skin. The progression is obvious, with bigger arrangements, stronger production and an even greater confidence in the songwriting.
