Whichever rock or metal group he plays in, Herman Frank’s playing stands out – which is why he is one of my favorite guitarists. Whether you want to headbang, mosh, or zero in on some of the more complex melodies and solos, his tone and songwriting is undoubtedly captivating.
Best known as a former axeman for Accept (including playing on the classic, Balls To The Wall as well as the rejuvenated incarnation of the band from 2009-2014), Frank has always been busy keeping international rock and metal alive.
Frank has led the charge with Victory, his long-running hard rock band from Germany, which formed in the 1980s. Their newest album, Circle of Life, which is available from AFM Records. Circle marks a special feat for Victory, as it marks the second consecutive outing of the band’s current lineup, following Gods of Tomorrow in 2021.
He also has his own solo project (which features two members of Victory) and Iron Allies with singer David Reece, of which I’m also a huge fan. I was so glad to speak with Herman about how he juggles all the talents and personalities of these groups and his excitement to hit the road in Germany as the special guest for Grave Digger’s 45th anniversary tour in January and February 2025.
