Andy Susemihl remains an enduring force in rock and roll. The German multi-instrumentalist can seamlessly shift between the pilot and co-pilot seats (as evidenced by his solo work and with Bangalore Choir and alongside singer David Reece) and also has success as a hired gun and limited-time member (U.D.O. and Sinner).
I became more in tune with Susemihl upon his reemergence with Reece on 2020’s Cacophony of Souls and his subsequent stream of solo work. Since then, I’ve been delving into his back catalogue while concurrently charting his progress – he’s a truly inspiring artist.
His 35-plus years’ career features a substantial and varied solo discography that runs the gamut of rock, metal, pop and instrumental music; and when at the mic, listeners are treated to a smoother-sounding Steve Winwood, who often comments on the chaos of the world and its effect on our collective sense of selves and charts a path for inner peace and prosperity.
This tradition of lyrical and musical excellence is continued on Milestones, his 11th solo album. I had the pleasure of speaking with Andy about the themes explored on the album, some highlights from his recent output and his overall creative process.
