Review by Glen Parkes
There’s a certain electricity that comes from musicians who have already lived several musical lifetimes and decide to push forward rather than look back. Cowboys in Pinstriped Suits captures that energy perfectly. It’s an album driven by experience, confidence, and a deep love of rock ’n’ roll in all its gritty, soulful forms. While Black Eyed Sons may present themselves as a fresh chapter, the record itself sounds anything but tentative, delivering a bold and expansive statement from start to finish.
The album opens with “Lie To Me”, a track that immediately establishes the band’s intent. Thick guitars, a steady groove, and a vocal delivery full of character set the tone for what follows. There’s a classic rock backbone here, but it’s polished with a modern bite, ensuring the song feels current rather than nostalgic. It’s a confident opener that pulls the listener straight into the album’s world.
“Medicine” raises the tempo and attitude, leaning into hard rock swagger with a punchy chorus and razor-sharp riffs. The track thrives on its raw edge, balancing grit and melody in a way that feels tailor-made for live performance. That sense of performance runs throughout the album, giving many of the songs a tangible, almost physical presence.
On “Foolin’ Yourself”, the band explores a looser, more streetwise groove. There’s a sleazy charm to the arrangement, with guitars weaving around the rhythm section while the vocals glide effortlessly over the top. It’s one of those tracks that feels steeped in late-night rock club energy, confident without being overbearing.
The mood shifts with “Autumn Reigns”, which introduces a more reflective side of the band. Rich melodies and a warmer, more expansive arrangement allow the song to breathe. It’s a standout moment that shows Black Eyed Sons are just as comfortable exploring atmosphere and emotion as they are delivering full-throttle rockers.
The album’s centrepiece, “Cowboys in Pinstriped Suits”, is a statement track in every sense. Brimming with attitude and personality, it fuses classic rock bravado with a knowing sense of maturity. The chorus hits hard, the instrumentation feels expansive, and the song carries a sense of celebration—of survival, resilience, and still having something to say.
“Don’t Throw Me In The Corner” follows with a tighter, more direct approach. It’s punchy, driving, and unapologetic, powered by a rhythm section that locks in with real authority. There’s no excess here—just straight-ahead rock delivered with conviction.
Melody takes centre stage on “Your True Colours”, a track that leans into emotional honesty. The vocals feel open and sincere, supported by tasteful instrumentation that builds without overwhelming the song’s heart. It’s one of the album’s most accessible moments, offering a breather while still maintaining impact.
“Savoir Faire” brings a blues-inflected swagger back into the mix, dripping with character and groove. It’s a song that feels effortless, the result of musicians who understand dynamics and know when to let a track roll rather than force it.
As the album heads toward its conclusion, “Dig Me Out Of This Hole” and “So Glorious” reinforce the record’s emotional depth. Both tracks balance grit and uplift, pairing introspective themes with powerful arrangements that refuse to wallow. There’s a sense of perseverance running through them that feels genuine rather than contrived.
The closing track, “Can’t Put Your Arms Around A Memory”, is a fitting finale. Reflective and heartfelt, it brings the album to a close on a thoughtful note, leaving a lingering emotional resonance long after the final chord fades.
Cowboys in Pinstriped Suits is more than just a debut under a new name. It’s a fully realised rock album built on chemistry, respect, and shared history. Black Eyed Sons have crafted a record that celebrates collaboration without losing identity, delivering a powerful reminder that experience, when channelled creatively, can still produce something vital and exciting.
