Beth Hart | Usher Hall, Edinburgh | 16 May 2026

Review By Darren McIntyre Images By Scott Anderson

There are venues, and then there are institutions. Edinburgh’s Usher Hall, last night, this magnificent room was filled to capacity, The reason? One name, and one name alone: Beth Hart the undisputed queen of blues-rock was in town, and the turnout was absolute proof that her star has never shone brighter.

Kicking the night off in style were Wille & The Bandits Wille Edwards alongside Harry Mackaill proved to be the perfect support, delivering a masterclass in modern blues. Edwards possesses one of the most distinctive voices in the scene today, paired with incredible skill on slide and Weissenborn guitars, while Mackaill held it all together with deep, rich bass tones. Drawing from their Acoustic Revisions Vol. 1 EP, their set mixed sharp original tracks with a brilliant reimagining of Robert Johnson’s Crossroads, earning a huge response from the early crowd.

Now we have the one we have waited for I’ve lived with her music through records and online streams, immersing myself in that incredible catalogue. But let me tell you something — nothing, absolutely nothing, prepares you for the sheer magnitude of Beth Hart in the live environment. What you hear on a recording is outstanding, but in person? It transforms into something else entirely: a raw, unfiltered, powerhouse performance that hits you right in the chest.

Possessing a vocal instrument that boasts the depth and control usually reserved for opera houses, Hart commands the stage with staggering ability. She moves effortlessly from a guttural, thunderous roar down to a fragile, whisper-soft delivery, nailing every nuance, every pause, and every emotional turn along the way. Whether tearing through gritty blues shuffles, delivering soul-drenched covers, or sitting alone at the piano for a tender ballad, her voice is the driving force.

But she’s far more than just a singer; she’s a supreme talent on guitar and keys, and a songwriter who captures the full spectrum of the human experience. The setlist was a perfect reflection of this range — from the fun, foot-stomping swagger of Wanna Be Big Bad Johnny Cash to the dark, brooding intensity of tracks like Love Gangster and Savior With A Razor, she took us everywhere.

We all know Beth’s story; her battles and her journey to stability have been well documented, and she wears that history openly. She spoke candidly to the crowd last night, laying bare the duality that defines her art: the bold, fiery rock ‘n’ roll persona we see up front, contrasted with the sensitive, introspective soul that lives beneath the surface. This balance shaped the entire evening. We had high-octane rockers, we had a stunning stripped-back acoustic segment, and we had those deeply personal moments at the piano — which she described as her safe haven — where it felt like she was singing just to you.

From the moment she launched into opener Tell ‘Em to Hold On, the chemistry between artist and audience was instant and electric. This wasn’t a performance where the star stays behind the barricade; Beth stepped right off the stage, walked through the stalls, shook hands, and connected with every single person there.

That is the secret to her massive following — it’s never just been about the music, although the music is world-class. It’s about honesty. She shares her scars, her joy, and her truth, and in return, the fans hold her close to their hearts. Even her choice of covers — reworkings of classics from Melody Gardot, Bobby “Blue” Bland, and Tom Waits — were stamped with her own unique identity, standing shoulder to shoulder with her own masterpieces.

When the lights finally came up, it was clear we had witnessed much more than just another tour date. Beth Hart doesn’t just play a show; she pours her entire heart and soul into every single note. Emotional, powerful, and utterly authentic, she remains a true titan of the genre. For anyone lucky enough to be inside the Usher Hall last night, we didn’t just see a concert — we witnessed a master at work.
