Madrai Light Up the Night with 80s-Infused Anthem “When The Lights Go Down”

Review By Glen Parkes

Northern Ireland’s own Madrai are back, and this time they’re turning the emotional intensity up to arena level with their 80s-inspired new single “When The Lights Go Down” — dropping August 15th. Following the raw vulnerability of their debut track “Leaving On My Own,” the four-piece prove they can not only bare their souls but also set them alight with shimmering pop-rock grandeur.

Madrai have been making serious noise since their formation, earning early praise from Hot Press, Chordblossom, and Rock n’ Load, plus a nomination for Single of the Year at the Northern Ireland Music Prize. They’ve already sold out Belfast’s Ulster Sports Club, won the Rockshore Battle of the Bands over 24 competitors, and headlined the legendary Empire Music Hall — not bad for a band still in the early chapters of their story.

“When The Lights Go Down” feels like a natural next step — a track that merges the rich vocal harmonies and hook-laden choruses they’re quickly becoming known for with lush 80s textures, cinematic guitar swells, and a rhythm section built for both radio and the festival stage. Produced by Jonny Woods (Wynona Bleach) at Belfast’s 1980something Studios, the song benefits from meticulous production that lets every synth shimmer and drum hit land with punchy precision.

At its heart, this is more than just a retro nod — it’s an emotional release. True to the band’s style, the song dives into the turbulence of the human heart, but frames it in a way that feels uplifting, like driving through a city at night with the windows down and a future wide open.

With their debut EP What I’m Doing This For arriving September 12th, “When The Lights Go Down” sets the stage for Madrai to step fully into the spotlight — and they’re glowing brighter than ever.
